From first splashes to strong strokes
A journey from 4 months to adulthood, guided by our Swim England qualified instructors. Every child starts with the Duckling awards before moving on to the main stages.
Discovery Ducklings
The start of the journey. Water confidence through play, with adult support close by.
Ducklings
Children start to move by themselves, eventually jumping in, going underwater, floating and travelling 10 metres unaided.
Swim Well main lesson programme
Our main programme works through Stages 1 to 7 of the Swim England lesson framework. Watch what each stage covers.
Water confidence
Builds water confidence, introduces water safety and the basic skills needed to start swimming.
Streamlining
Develops streamlined strokes and travelling without feet on the floor, using a recognised leg kick.
Front & back kicks
Swimmers develop their kicks, on both their front and their back.
Refining strokes
Refines strokes to Swim England expected standards, developing kick, breathing and increasing distances.
Treading & skills
Treading water, the correct arm pulls for all four strokes, plus handstands and somersaults.
Efficient technique
Preparing for exercise, developing efficient technique across all four strokes and surface dives.
Stamina & diving
Fully developing all four strokes, building stamina and improving diving skills.
Develop Well
Now you can swim, what's next? The Develop Well programme offers a variety of water-based activities to further your skills, from diving and lifesaving to water polo and synchronised swimming, with the potential to join one of the borough's swimming clubs.
Lifeguard & lifesaving
Learn how to save a life and stay safe in and around water. The Rookie Lifeguard programme is developed by the Royal Life Saving Society UK, the leading provider for water safety education.
Synchronised swimming
Designed to encourage children, boys and girls, to learn the basic synchro moves while having fun and building confidence in the water.
Water polo
A great way for children to get involved in the team game of water polo. Build on your water skills, learning how to throw, catch and move with the ball in the water.
